John Tavares and Victor Hedman, the top two picks in the Entry Draft last June, will meet for the first time in the NHL. Both are off to impressive starts. Tavares leads all rookies with 11 goals and 22 points, while Hedman has stepped into a regular role on Tampa Bay’s defense, averaging about 20 minutes a game. The two figure to have more than one encounter.The Islanders are still without defenseman Andy Sutton (groin) and center Doug Weight (upper body). But they may be close to getting starting goaltender Rick DiPietro back he’s scheduled to begin a rehab stint on Saturday. … Tampa forward Paul Szczechura left Friday’s game and did not return due to a lower-body injury.
Moulson’s hat trick gave him a team-high 14 goals. He and Tavares have 22 points, tops on the Isles. … Tampa Bay’s Ryan Malone and Steven Stamkos have combined for 32 goals, the second-highest total by any two teammates. Only San Jose’s Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley (37) have more.
